Yeasts:

Brewer's Yeast is a supplement that doubles as a food...you can cook with it, or add it to foods for its many benefits.
It can be sprinkled on pet foods for their health and also to repel fleas and ticks (1 tsp. per day for cats; 1 tsp. per pound of weight for dogs per day).
It has been know to repel mosquitoes for humans who consume it daily.
Brewer's yeast is loaded with B-vitamins and contains all the essential amino acids--making it a complete protein. It is also high in chromium, zinc, selenium, and iron. Take 1-2 tablespoons per day in a smoothie or other preparation. Numerous recipes can be found on-line.
  • People with intestinal diseases, gout, or vaginal infections (Candida) should not take brewer's yeast.
  • Diabetics taking insulin should consult their physician prior to use as it may interfere with insulin.
  • Those with impaired immune systems should avoid brewer's yeast as it may lead to infection
Red Yeast Rice has shown huge promise in clinical trials, but the down side is it's not prescribed to those currently taking statins due to red yeast rice containing lovastatin (though in small amounts). It has, however, been prescribed to those who are unable to tolerate statins. It has mixed reviews in the medical field.

Nutritional Yeast is a dietary staple among vegetarians and vegans. It imparts a cheesy and nutty flavor to foods and is loaded with B-complex vitamins (except B12--unless it states it is fortified with it) and it is a complete protein. It can be sprinkled on popcorn, salad, pasta, salad dressings, just about anything!

Vitamins:

Niacin is vitamin B3. It's found in most multi-vitamins, dairy, fish, and meats. Unfortunately, very large doses are needed to improve high cholesterol numbers. It is available in high doses through prescription. A common side-effect is flushing (known as the niacin flush); it is not harmful, but can be unsettling. Niacin works by raising your HDL--good cholesterol.
